Running Pvm Applications in the Punch Wide Area Network-computing Environment

چکیده
This paper outlines key issues that must be addressed in order to allow PVM-based programs to make eeective use of resources within a wide area network-computing environment. Support mechanisms that allow unmodiied PVM programs to be used within the PUNCH network-computing environment are also described. The mechanisms were found to be easy to implement, and preliminary experiences indicate that the described approach is well-suited for a network-computing environment.

Grid computing enables the enormous, but often poorly utilized, computing resources existing on the Internet to be harnessed in order to solve large-scale problems. However, if they want to solve the problems of configuration and performance optimization of their large-scale applications, programmers wishing to exploit such computing resources have to deal with highly variable communication del...

Emulating a parallel machine via a collection of heterogenous independent hosts and a general-purpose local area network has obvious advantages such as cost-eeectiveness and very large aggregate processing power and memory. However, the ability of most current general-purpose local area networks to support communication-intensive parallel applications has been questionable. Today, with the emer...
